Dallas Mavericks forward Luka Doncic was disappointed after he found out he was snubbed from the All-Star Game, despite being one of the most-voted players through the fan portion of the selection process.
“I wanted to go and I was very disappointed when they told me I wasn’t,” said Doncic, according to Alex Madrid of EuroHoops. “What matters is the people who voted for me. I was impressed and that’s what matters most to me. Maybe next year I’ll be there.”
Doncic rapidly became a fan favorite, no only in Dallas, but around the world — delivering buzzer-beating threes and wild finishes at the rim, despite his lack of superior athleticism or limberness as a point-forward.
His natural scoring instinct and feel for the game immediately endeared him to an NBA crowd that has learned to see the beauty in international talents like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kristaps Porzingis and Ben Simmons.
Doncic went from having the proverbial baton passed on to him from franchise star Dirk Nowitzki, to potentially sharing it with the newly-acquired Porzingis, who will join him once fully recovered from a season-ending ACL injury.
“It’s something special what we’re going to have here with Porzingis,” said Doncic. “He is a great player and we can do many good things. We already knew each other, we played many times against and now, finally, we play together. We can do great things.”
Dallas has now become the International House of Ballers, having built a reputation for a keen eye to scout overseas and choosing the right talent to accelerate this rebuild. As far as Doncic becoming an undisputed All-Star, well that's just a matter of time.
