The Dallas Mavericks absorbed their 30th loss of the season on Tuesday, falling prey to the Denver Nuggets on the road, 105-102. The Mavs nearly got back from 16 points down to start the fourth quarter, though, as they outscored Denver, 33-19 in the final period. Of those 33 points they racked up in the fourth quarter, none was more electric than this “get out of the way” dunk from Mavs rookie sensation Dennis Smith. Jr.

Not that Smith would not have soared that high in other places, but that thin air in Denver must have given him that extra oomph in his explosive verticals.

Dennis Smith Jr. would finish the game with a team-high 25 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field. He was aggressive all night long, as all his points came from inside the three-point arc. He also had five assists, two rebounds, and a steal.

This season is tough for Mavericks fans, but rookie Smith is trying his best to make Dallas at least a watchable team. He is the best selling-point for Dallas right now, and plays like that in Denver surely helps his case as the worthy successor of Dirk Nowitzki as the future face of the franchise.

Smith, who was taken ninth overall by Dallas in last year’s NBA Draft, is averaging 14.3 points, 4.5 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game this season.

As for the 15-30 Mavericks, they will have a long three full days of rest before taking the court again this coming Saturday against the Portland Trail Blazers on the road.
