The NBA free agency frenzy got off to a fast start. Big names were coming off the shelf faster than PS5 gaming consoles did. But not for the Golden State Warriors, which was expected.
The Warriors are well over the NBA salary cap and luxury tax. Four players make over 24 million per year, and Stephen Curry, the highest-paid player, is making a whopping 45 million this season. So the Warriors weren't looking at grabbing anybody big in this year's market.
But the Warriors did make some moves. Some moves were voluntary, and some weren't. The first thing that transpired was Kent Bazemore decided to part ways with the Dubs. The 32-year-old veteran ended up being a pivotal part of the Warriors rotation. Sometimes he could get out of control and in foul trouble, but usually, that out-of-control style of play helped the Dubs win games. He shot a career-high from long-range, knocking down the three-ball at 40% last season. Losing an aggressive defender and knockdown shooter definitely hurts the Warriors.
Article Continues BelowAfter losing Bazemore to the Lakers, the Warriors signed Otto Porter Jr. He is a younger player and could be considered an upgrade. For his entire career, the 2013 number 3 pick in the draft shoots the three at 40%. So when it comes to shooting, he's the better player. Bazemore hit the 40% mark last season, but that was the only year he's been that high. This signing could end up an excellent deal if Porter could stay healthy. He's played a total of 42 games over the past two years. His health will be something to keep an eye on.
It was rumored the Warriors were close to signing free agent Nicolas Batum. He would be a perfect fit for the Dubs. A long wing who can defend and shoot the basketball is always valuable. He's an underrated passer that can make plays for others. It seemed the Warriors had a chance to snatch him away from the Clippers. But he ended up accepting a two-year deal to stay in Los Angeles.
So at the end of the day, the Warriors did a decent job with what was available for the first day. The money wasn't there to attract the more prominent free agents, but getting Porter on a minimum deal could be excellent. A fair grade for the day is a B. You didn't lose everything and might have gained an unexpected gym in return, and only time will tell.
