NBA players are shooting the ball better than they ever have.

Last season, the NBA as a whole set a record for the highest effective field goal percentage in league history. The eFG% metric takes into account weighting the value of three-pointers against all other field goals.

The 50.2 percent mark just beat 2013-14 and 2009-10, when the league shot 50.1 percent.

Why did this happen? Well, the answer is pretty simple really. Last season, teams shot and made more threes than ever before, as well. Teams posted an overall field goal percentage of 45.2 percent last season, which is just the 36th best season in NBA history.

There's some debate out there on the direction the league is going with all of the 3-point shooting. Old school guys like Charles Barkley have often believed you can't win championships shooting jump shots, something the Warriors and Spurs proved false in recent years.

You also see teams like the Houston Rockets trying to game the system, focusing solely on three-pointers and shots at the rim. They've had mixed results with the approach.

Overall, the effort to look at the numbers and figure out where the highest percentage looks are is a movement that's paying off. It's not as simple as just shooting a bunch of threes and driving to the rim. It's more about working to creatively generate those types of shots within an offensive system that puts stress on the defense.

Teams are getting better at this, none more so than the record-breaking Warriors last season. We should expect future teams to continue to jack up threes at a record-breaking pace. It makes for some pretty exciting basketball, to say the least.
