Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant will eventually be in line for a max contract for his basketball talents. For now, the Rookie of the Year favorite is taking inspiration from another young stars' mega-deal.
Morant quote-tweeted a series of photos posted by the Grizzlies on their official account on Tuesday. In the images, Ja can be seen doing his best Patrick Mahomes impression — dropping back to pass and throwing a basketball at practice in Orlando.
“Just trying to get dat mahomes contract,” Morant captioned his tweet. The team's original post wrote “QB 12” — a reference to Morant's uniform number and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady.

Earlier this month, the Kansas City Chiefs — fresh off the franchise's first Super Bowl victory — rewarded Mahomes with an unprecedented 10-year contract extension that could be worth over $450 million. In his first three seasons in the NFL, the 24-year old quarterback has won regular season MVP and Super Bowl MVP.
In Ja Morant's rookie season, the Grizzlies' 2019 second overall pick has averaged 17.6 points and 6.9 assist per game. His electricity and creativity has been infectious, leading the upstart Memphis (32-33) to the No.8 seed in the Western Conference before the season hiatus.
Morant signed his rookie deal in July 2019, so he'll be under team control through the 2023 season, earning roughly $12.1 million in 2022-23. However, assuming Morant continues on his impressive trajectory, Memphis will surely attempt to lock him up long before he has a chance to hit free agency.
