Karl-Anthony Towns seems perfectly happy to be a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves, but that does not mean he approves of the way he has been utilized up until this point.
As a matter of fact, Towns feels he has been compromised quite a bit and thinks Ryan Saunders could be the man to change that:
“I think I’ve been held back to 40 percent of my talent,” Towns said, according to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic. “It’s going to be fun to be able to tap into a little more with Ryan Saunders at the helm. I’m going to have a lot of fun being able to play more freely and be able to do things I’ve been doing my whole life that I’ve been held back from doing in the NBA so far.”
When asked what exactly was holding Towns back, he only said “situational things.”
One can't help but feel this was a shot at former Timberwolves head coach Tom Thibodeau, whom Towns recently ripped for his inability to properly develop players. Thibodeau coached Minnesota for two and a half seasons before being fired midway through the 2018-19 campaign.
It's also possible that Towns was taking a jab at former teammate Jimmy Butler, with whom Towns had a much-publicized rocky relationship that eventually resulted in a practice tirade from Butler at the beginning of the season in which Butler targeted both Towns and Andrew Wiggins.
Butler was later traded to the Philadelphia 76ers.
Still, Towns managed to put up monster numbers this past year in spite of everything, averaging 24.4 points, 12.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.6 blocks per game while posting a true shooting percentage of 62.2 percent.
