The partnership between Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans has worked terribly so far. In three years, neither side is closer to reaching their goals.
The Williamson saga has played out very weirdly this season. His injury status has hardly improved and rumors are flying around that he is not happy there. Such rumors have been floated previously but with Williamson not reaching out to CJ McCollum upon his trade to the Pelicans, the uncertainty about Zion's happiness with the franchise exacerbated.
McCollum came to Williamson's side, saying that he should be allowed to rehabilitate in peace and that the team is ready to get him back once he's ready. The two finally spoke a few days after the All-Star break.
CJ McCollum on Zion: “Leave the young fella alone. He’s trying to rehab in peace, trying to get himself ready to come back. We spoke and I’ll spoke to him later this week or next week.”
Added: “He’ll be healthy eventually and when he is we’ll welcome him with open arms.”

New Orleans head coach Willie Green also stressed the importance of being understanding with Williamson's road ahead.
Coach Green: What Z is going through is extremely difficult, I’ve been through injuries, know how things weigh on you — for us it’s important here to have compassion for what he’s going through. #Pelicans

Williamson reportedly does not have much faith in Pelicans executive David Griffin, which could be the cause of his rift from the team. He posted a heartfelt message about his teammates Jaxson Hayes and Willy Hernangomez, which further suggests that he is not alone in his journey to get back to the court and lead the Pelicans. McCollum's leadership should only help matters.
It's very odd to track the progress of Williamson, who was previously seen as a slam-dunk top prospect, in baby steps. Still, his talent is obvious when he is healthy. Although it may take a long time to get there, it could very well be worth it.
