When the New York Knicks traded big man Kristaps Porzingis to the Dallas Mavericks in a surprising blockbuster deal last week, they may have torpedoed any chance they had at landing New Orleans Pelicans superstar Anthony Davis, at least for now.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports that outside of potentially landing the No. 1 overall pick in this summer's NBA Draft, the Knicks just don't have the assets needed to acquire Davis in a trade.
This isn't very surprising.
While New York certainly has some decent young talent in the form of players like Kevin Knox and Allonzo Trier, it is going to take a lot more than that to pry Davis away from the Pelicans.
Article Continues BelowAt just 25 years old, Davis is likely one of the best players to have ever gone on the NBA trade market, so New Orleans is obviously going to want to make sure it gets an appropriate return when it does trade the big man.
The Knicks ended up dealing Porzingis to the Mavericks after the young star called a meeting with New York executives and told them that he no longer wanted to play for the team, prompting the Knicks to rush to trade him before the Feb. 7 deadline.
In doing so, New York picked up some decent long-term assets, but also severely hurt its chances of trading for Davis, as Porzingis was certainly the top talent on the Knicks and someone whom the Pelicans absolutely would have asked for in return. New Orleans actually even shut down New York's Porzingis offer recently, needing more in the deal to make it worthwhile.
The Los Angeles Lakers have held discussions with New Orleans about a potential deal for Davis, but thus far, the Lakers have been rebuffed.
