The Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics are two of teams reportedly with the highest interest in trading for San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard. However, neither of the two has yet to make a significant step towards acquiring Leonard.

While the Spurs have rejected the Lakers before, Magic Johnson and company have remained resilient in changing San Antonio’s stance. As for the Celtics, they have contacted San Antonio before, but their conversation did not result to anything meaningful.

According to Yannis Koutroupis, formerly of HoopsWorld, while citing an unnamed source, the Lakers and the Celtics could get Leonard if they are willing to build around a package involving Kyrie Irving and Brandon Ingram, respectively.

Been retired for a while so not sure if I'm still doing this right, but according to a source there are two players the Spurs are open to being centerpieces in a Kawhi deal: Kyrie Irving and Brandon Ingram.

For the Lakers and the Celtics, shipping a package built around those players would be easier to justify if only they could get assurance from Leonard that he’s willing to stay with the team beyond next year. Leonard has one more year left on his current deal, which will earn him $21.3 million in 2018-19, and will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of next season.

Giving up control of Kyrie Irving for only one certain year of Leonard in the fold may be too much for Boston. The same line of thinking goes with the Lakers, though, getting Leonard will also increase their chances of signing LeBron James.
