Following a humiliating loss to the University of Wisconsin in the Pinstripe Bowl last week, University of Miami head coach Mark Richt has announced his retirement, according to Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.

Richt coached Miami for three years, going 26-13 during his tenure and leading the Hurricanes to three bowl games and one bowl win.

He went 9-4 in 2016, leading Miami to a win over West Virginia in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Then, last season, the Hurricanes went 10-3 under Richt but lost to Wisconsin in the Orange Bowl.

This year represented Miami's most disappointing season with Richt at the helm. The Hurricanes opened up the year ranked eighth in the country by the Associated Press, but they limped to a 7-6 finish and were hammered by Wisconsin by a score of 35-3 in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Richt made this statement upon calling it quits:

Prior to coaching Miami, Richt spent 15 years as the head coach of Georgia, going 145-51 overall and leading the Bulldogs to nine bowl wins.

The once-proud Miami football program has fallen on hard times over the last 15 years, failing to record double-digit wins in a single season since 2003 and winning just three bowl games during that span.

As a matter of fact, the Hurricanes have ended up without bowl game appearances three times since then.

Miami's downfall actually began ever since moving to the ACC in 2004. Before the move, the Hurricanes had posted four straight double-digit win seasons in the Big East, including the 2001-02 campaign in which they won a national title.
