The sports world has been buzzing for days since the Selection Committee announced their choices for the College Football Playoff on Sunday, December 3rd. Most notably excluded from the list was undefeated Florida State football which became the first undefeated Power 5 conference team to go unselected..
It is worth noting that in the 12-1 Alabama's final regular season game in the Iron Bowl vs. their in-state rival, the 6-6 Auburn Tigers, they needed a miracle Hail Mary touchdown reception to secure a nail-biting 27-24 victory. While in Florida State's final regular season game in the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services nicknamed “Sunshine Showdown” vs. in-state rival, the 5-7 Florida Gators, they won 24-15 with backup quarterback Tate Rodemaker filling in for the injured Jordan Travis and a strong showing from Running-back Trey Benson.
Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin was asked to comment on the Committee's decision and he said an earful. Via Austin Veazey:
“I do feel for Florida State football and their players for doing everything they were asked to do and not making it, that was really obviously the first time that's ever happened. To be undefeated and for that to happen I do feel for them and Coach Norvell because they had an amazing season, overcame a lot to do what they did.”
Due to Kiffin's status as a coach within the SEC, this is a huge public display of support for an opposing conference team. Many believe a 12-team format would be the perfect remedy but unfortunately, that won't commence until next season.
