Not only did Kansas State football (9-4, 5-4 Big 12) end its season on a high note with a 44-41 Rate Bowl win over Rutgers, but it's also cooking in the transfer portal. That continued on Tuesday, as the Wildcats landed EDGE Jayshawn Ross out of Alabama, via On3.
The 6-foot-4, 239-pounder was a true freshman this past season and only played against Mercer in limited action on November 16. Ross almost went to Kansas State out of high school last year, but went with the Crimson Tide after a visit from Nick Saban.
The Kansas City native opened up during that time about his love for the Wildcats, via 247 Sports' Cole Carmody.
“K-State just has the root to the story,” Ross said. “Always been there for me and has done tremendous things for me. Great program, great coaches, lots of opportunities with the great talents through there, and thank you to them. Nothing but grateful.”
Ross was a unanimous four-star recruit out of Liberty North High School after recording 15 sacks in 13 games his senior year. However, an injury forced him to miss the beginning of the season with Alabama and made it difficult to work up the depth chart.
The Wildcats, though, landed a promising talent if GoPowercat's high school scouting report is accurate, via 247.
“The former St. Pius product turned Eagle is truly a special pass rusher. Blessed with natural gifts like length, bend and burst, Ross would probably land in the same category as PJ Adebawore or Chester Graves among the best speed edges I can remember in the Kansas City metro.”
“Far too quick for larger high school tackles and overpowering for those slimmer, more mobile anchors, Ross is a fairly complete package at 6-feet-4, 225 pounds. The trick for Ross moving forward will be maintaining his focus and limiting lapses. When the defender is engaged and locked in, both on and off the field, there's joy and positive results. How he matures to handle adversity when struggles arise, as they surely will at the next level for every freshman, will be huge for the school of his choice.”
Ross joins a deep Kansas State transfer class that includes South Alabama cornerback Amarion Fortenberry and Nebraska running back Gabe Ervin Jr., via On3.
