San Diego State has been the subject of plenty of rumors recently, as a possible move to the Pac-12 appears to be in the works. In fact, radio personality Dan Patrick reported that the Aztecs could make the move as soon as this week.

However, conflicting reports have since emerged, ones that pour cold water on the Aztecs' potential Pac-12 move. Here's the details, per Nicole Auerbach of The Athletic.

Per Auerbach, “The report about the Pac-12 announcing the addition of SDSU as soon as this week, a source close to the situation tells The Athletic that the report is inaccurate.”

Essentially, pump the brakes on any possible San Diego State move to the Pac-12. At least for now. Jon Wilner on Twitter adds that commissioner George Kliavkoff has emphasized his conference's need for a media rights deal first before they consider expansion.

But there are plenty of reasons why an Aztecs move makes sense. First, it would thrust San Diego State onto the national spotlight, as they'd benefit from the added exposure- and opportunities- that teams in Power 5 conferences receive.

From the Pac-12's perspective, the conference would be making up for the losses of UCLA and USC, who are headed to the Big Ten in 2024, to some degree.

That has to entice Kliavkoff, who has spoken about his conference “eventually” catching up to the SEC and the Big Ten. But it's clear that the media rights deal is the priority here.

And it should be, given that the Big Ten secured a deal set to bring in over $7 billion over the next seven years in August.

So, don't expect any major expansion moves anytime soon from the Pac-12.
