The Texas football team is in the College Football Playoff and will face the undefeated Washington Huskies in the Sugar Bowl. However, the Longhorns will be without safety Derek Williams for the first half of the game after his targeting appeal was denied, per Chip Brown of 247Sports.

BREAKING: #Texas S Derek Williams will miss the first half of the Sugar Bowl against #Washington after an appeal of Williams' targeting ejection from the second half of the Big 12 title game was denied, a source close to the situation told @Horns247.'

Williams' hit came against Oklahoma State in the Big 12 title game:

The freshman safety has played well for the Texas football team this season, recording 22 tackles with one PD, and having him miss the first half against an offense loaded with talent such as the Huskies is certainly not a good sign.

On top of that, safety Jalen Catalon entered the transfer portal, so the Longhorns now have Jerrin Thompson, Michael Taaffe and Kitan Crawford at the position.

The Texas football team has just one loss all season, coming against Oklahoma by four points at the beginning of October, and Alabama's win over Georgia in the SEC title game was essentially the bump the Longhorns needed to get into the playoff. The other playoff matchup is undefeated Michigan against Alabama, and that is a classic blue-blood matchup between two top-tier head coaches as well.

The Sugar Bowl will take place on New Year's Day at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
