The Nebraska Cornhuskers had a painful start to their 2023 college football season. Nebraska football was on the verge of beating the Minnesota Golden Gophers on the road Thursday, but a wild series of events down the stretch had the Cornhuskers winding up with a 13-10 loss. Immediately, college football fans on X (formerly Twitter) flooded the timeline with all sorts of reactions to the crazy finish.

What makes the loss of Nebraska football to the Golden Gophers is the fact that it's the latest in a long list of one-score losses for the Cornhuskers — a trend they apparently can't still shake off despite a new head coach in Matt Rhule.

“Nebraska is now 2-14 in one-score finishes since the start of 2021. Genuinely incredible,” posted Bill Connelly of ESPN.

“Fireworks in Minneapolis as the Gophers scrape by and spoil Matt Rhule’s debut at Nebraska. Minnesota extends their streak to 5-games over the Huskers, and extend their series lead to 37-25-2, 8-5 since the Huskers joined the Big Ten. First team P.J. Fleck has beat 6 times,” said RedditCFB.

Nebraska had a seven-point lead when they scored on a touchdown just a little under 13 minutes remaining in regulation. The Cornhuskers still had that lead until a little over two minutes left in the contest when Minnesota tied the game up with a touchdown grab by Athan Kaliakmanis. Nebraska had enough time to grab the lead back but the Cornhuskers instead turned the ball over when Jeff Sims threw an interception that allowed the Golden Gophers to win the game via a Dragan Kesich field goal from 47 yards out.

Sims struggled passing the ball against Minnesota, as he went just 11 of 19 with a touchdown and three interceptions. (Nebraska had a total of four turnovers.) However, he picked up 91 rushing yards on 19 carries to lead Nebraska on the ground. As a team, the Cornhuskers generated 295 total yards to 251 by the Golden Gophers.

Nebraska will look to recover right away in the next game against Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes on the road. Minnesota, on the other hand, stays home where they will face the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Sep. 9.
