Ratings for NFL Thursday Night Football have been declining in recent seasons, and the outlet that will show Thursday night games in the future is currently undetermined. According to John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal, there could be massive changes in store for Thursday Night Football.

As of this moment, FOX Sports is the network that has the rights to Thursday Night Football, with games also being aired on NFL Network. However, after FOX Sports' contract expires with Thursday Night Football after the 2022 season, it remains to be seen what network would be interested in acquiring Thursday night games.

With that in mind, Ourand points out that there aren't any networks showing much interest in airing NFL Thursday Night Football. Seeing that everyone can stream games on other services, the race for Thursday night games doesn't seem like much of a race at all.

ESPN has the rights to NFL Monday Night Football and likely wouldn't be open to adding a Thursday game to their docket. On the other hand, NBC has Sunday Night Football, which means they would also have a lack of interest in having Thursday night contests.

Of course, players in the NFL would love to rid of Thursday Night Football entirely if possible. Having games on Thursday can make it more likely that injuries occur, with players having played just a few days prior.

But with the NFL focused on making money, it's highly unlikely that the league scraps the idea of Thursday night games. Though, while FOX Sports continues to air games for the next two seasons, it is unknown who will be open to paying a lump sum of money for the right for Thursday Night Football.
