Unvaccinated players have been forced to wear masks all season. Any unvaccinated player or team staff member has been required to wear a mask at all times when at indoor team facilities. That includes post game interviews with the media.
The NFL did update some of the protocols. Teams are now allowed to hydrate players with water from the same water bottle. Previously that was not allowed. Also, teams are allowed to invite one fully vaccinated honorary captain to attend the coin toss for each game.
All of this has been brought about after Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was conducting interviews without a mask. It was later determined that he was unvaccinated and in violation of the COVID-19 protocols. That set off a firestorm of controversy, surrounding both the Packers organization and Rodgers himself.
The league wants to send a message that they are taking this seriously. The NFL's internal investigation about whether or not Green Bay broke protocol is still ongoing. But seeing the memo they sent out, it certainly appears they did.
Aaron Rodgers cannot be held responsible for that though. The team will more than likely be fined. Rodgers was forced to miss this past Sunday's game at Kansas City after contracting COVID-19. Jordan Love got the first start of his pro career in a loss to the Chiefs.
Love struggled mightily. The Packers hope Rodgers will be able to play this weekend. He is not allowed to rejoin the team until Saturday.
