The Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills are facing off in the Wild Card round. In fact, they are the first playoff game this year.

Buffalo went into half time with a commanding 13-0 lead. However, they came out in the second half ready to make that lead a little bigger. On the opening kick off of the second half, the Bills kicked it off to the Texans. Something strange followed.

Houston kneeled down, but never actually kneeled down. Then he tossed the ball to the ref, so the ball was just sitting in the end zone. Buffalo picked it up and scored, making the score 19-0. Or did they? The referees ruled that the kick return had given himself up, so the play was dead. That's a really confusing play.

The returner never actually takes a knee, or even goes into any sort of motion like that. Maybe he said something to the ref, it's impossible to tell. Either way, he never gives himself up. Therefore, it is hard to see how this play was whistled dead. You could say that the throwing of the ball to the ref is giving yourself up, but that's never been a rule before.

No matter what you argue though, the ruling is final. Play resumed and the Bills did not get their touchdown. With the third quarter almost over, Buffalo is up 16-0. So maybe this will just be a play that fades into obscurity. If the Texans find a way to come back and win, however, this could be seen as a major problem.

For now, this is just a strange call and another incident for people to point to when complaining about the refs or confusing rulings.
