The Atlanta Falcons will likely head into the 2020 season with the backup quarterback position locked in. Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Falcons have picked up Matt Schaub's $2 million option for next season.

Schaub originally signed a one-year deal with Atlanta in 2016 worth $2.75 million in 2016. Schaub then signed a two-year extension with Atlanta in 2017 worth roughly $9 million and then finally a two-year deal in 2019 worth $3.78 million.

The 15-year NFL veteran has spent the last three seasons as the backup to Falcons starting quarterback and 2016 league MVP Matt Ryan. The 38-year-old has appeared in 13 games for Atlanta over the last three years and actually made one start for the team this past season.

In that start, Schaub completed 39 of 52 passes for 460 yards, one touchdown and one interception in a 20-27 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

In five other appearances last season, the former Virginia Cavalier added 120 yards and two additional touchdowns to his resume.

Schaub was actually drafted by Atlanta way back in 2004 and played his first three seasons with the team. Schaub then spent the next seven seasons as the starting quarterback for the Houston Texans, leading the NFL in passing yards with 4,770 in 2009 and making the Pro Bowl in 2009 and 2012.

Schaub has proven to be a capable backup in recent years. Behind Schaub, the Falcons had second-year QB Kurt Benkert and 31-year-old Matt Simms on the depth chart in 2019. Both Simms and Benkert were placed on injured reserve prior to the start of the season.

Only Ryan and Schaub are currently listed on the Falcons roster.
