The Chicago Bears elected to place their lone franchise tag on Allen Robinson, preventing him from hitting free agency. Despite receiving the tag from the Bears, Robinson has no intentions of signing the tag anytime soon, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler said Sunday.
âAllen Robinson, Iâm told, has zero plans to sign his franchise tag in the immediate future. So considering their contract negotiations in the fall did not go well, this could drag out a long while where Robinson doesnât show up, doesnât sign that tag.â
It was assumed that Robinson was finally going to have another opportunity to test free agency after a stellar showing in 2020. However, the Bears chose to place the franchise tag on him, which is a move that could cause some issues on both sides.
Article Continues BelowOn the other side of things, choosing to not sign the tag could be a wise move from Robinson as there is uncertainty surrounding his future in Chicago. If the Bears are able to acquire an upgrade at quarterback like Russell Wilson or Deshaun Watson, then signing the tag would be an easy choice for Robinson because he would finally get a chance to play with a franchise quarterback.
But if Chicago is incapable of landing a viable signal-caller, then Robinson could play the long game, which could lead to a trade at some point in the offseason. Of course, that is assuming the Bears don't make things difficult for the Pro Bowl wideout.
Seeing that neither side could come close to a long-term deal in the past year, it's hard to believe that Chicago will suddenly present an offer that piques Robinson's interest. Given that, we could be headed toward a messy breakup between Allen Robinson and the Bears as long as the talented wideout refuses to put pen to paper on his new franchise tag.
