A.J. Green is sticking to his word. The Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver will not play in Week 16 against the Miami Dolphins, the team officially announced.

Earlier in the week, Green said he is unlikely to play in the last two weeks of the season, meaning that he won't play a down for the entirety of 2019. He figures that he's not at full health. The 31-year-old is not going to risk it.

“I haven’t jumped to catch a pass, and nobody has landed on my leg. So, that’s the biggest thing for me. Getting the confidence where I can run a route and somebody can jump on my ankle and I’ll be fine,” Green said on Wednesday, via the team's official website. “A lot of people don’t understand, a lot of it is mental that you have to get over. So, it’s a little bit of that. For me to go out there and play freely, I have to be at least 80-some percent to where I know I can go out there and actually be effective.”

Green suffered an ankle injury in training camp. What once was considered to be a few months of rehab has stretched into the entire season. Now, the seven-time Pro Bowler will enter free agency without games played in the most recent season — not a good look.

The Bengals are considering franchise tagging Green, which would be worth $18 million in 2020. Though injured all season long, they clearly want to give whoever players quarterback — likely Joe Burrow — a weapon to pass to.
