Stephen Jones, the Executive Vice President of the Dallas Cowboys, exclaimed that the team would ‘certainly look to improve' at cornerback. While everyone assumes he meant in the 2020 NFL Draft, Dallas is expressing interest in Dre Kirkpatrick, per Sports Illustrated's Mike Fisher.
Earlier this offseason, the Cowboys were faced with multiple financial decisions on the roster. Altogether, Dallas had to decide on who to keep between Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper, and Byron Jones.
Ultimately, the Cowboys ended up retaining Prescott and Cooper, leaving a void at cornerback. Following Jones' departure in free agency, Dallas now has a cornerback group that includes Anthony Brown, Chidobe Awuzie, and Jourdan Lewis.
Provided that, the Cowboys could definitely use some help in the secondary. Of the remaining options, Kirkpatrick is an option that could provide some experience at cornerback for Dallas.
Article Continues BelowKirkpatrick, who is currently a free agent, spent eight seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. Just last month, Kirkpatrick was released by the Bengals after the team signed Trae Waynes.
In his first six seasons in the NFL, Kirkpatrick contributed a total of 52 pass breakups and 10 interceptions. However, in his last two seasons, injuries have hindered his play, causing him to miss 13 games. As a result of his injuries, the former first-round pick has recorded zero interceptions and 13 deflections since 2018.
At 30 years old, Kirkpatrick can still be a contributor for a team looking to add a veteran piece. While there's interest from Dallas, it remains to be seen what it would cost to sign the experienced cornerback. Regardless of whether or not they sign Kirkpatrick, that shouldn't prevent the Cowboys from drafting a cornerback as well.
