Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Drew Lock, unfortunately, suffered a bit of a setback in his young career. Lock sprained his thumb during the team's most recent preseason game, and while he'll miss some time, luckily he won't be sidelined for too long.
The injury was especially bad timing because Lock appeared to be gaining on Kevin Hogan in the race to be Joe Flacco's backup right before it. Lock had been the third quarterback all offseason, but he entered Monday's preseason game second behind Flacco.
For his part, Lock said he isn't worried about whether he's going to be the backup or third-string to start the season. “I’m going to let the coaches decide on that,” Lock said after the game, per Jon Heath of The Broncos Wire.
“I’m confident in myself that I can be a backup quarterback right now, but again, it’s not my decision to make that call.”
Since the Broncos played in the Hall of Fame Game, this was actually already Lock's third taste of exhibition action. He said that the increased reps have really helped him, and he's been feeling more comfortable each time.
“I’d say that first game, it was super fast,” he said. “Head was spinning. The second game got a little bit better and then even this game I feel like I made a stride. I’m leaving this game just feeling more confident in myself.”
Flacco is entrenched as the starter for now, but Lock will be breathing down his neck if he falters. The Broncos didn't take Lock in the second round for him to never play, and unless the Broncos are playoff-bound, we're likely to see him at some point in 2019.
