The Detroit Lions have a lot of work to do ahead of the 2019 NFL season, but there is one position in particular that Lions general manager Bob Quinn hopes to assess very soon, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

“Be it through free agency or the NFL draft, Lions general manager Bob Quinn said at a fan forum for season-ticket holders on Monday that ‘the tight end position is definitely a priority for us' to upgrade this offseason.”

“This is a position of need,” Quinn said. “We know that.”

The unfortunate reality for Detroit is they could use an upgrade at nearly every position. While they do show some promise at some positions such as running back and wide receiver, the tight end position has been their Achilles heel in recent years.

The Lions had to watch on as former tight end Eric Ebron had a career-best season with the Indianapolis Colts. On top of Ebron's success, the Colts had a fantastic season, as well as the Lions, had to watch on and miss the playoffs yet again.

If Detroit does choose to draft a tight end this season, it's worth noting there has not been a tight end drafted in the first round that has emerged in recent years. The Lions may opt to look in the later rounds and hope to find some talent there instead. It's clear with free agent tight ends; the Lions have been known to miss opportunities in the past as they did last season with Jimmy Graham and Trey Burton.
