With no Matthew Stafford, T.J. Hockenson and Kerryon Johnson, the Detroit Lions' offense is nearly unwatchable. However, there is a keyword there: nearly. Kenny Golladay has flourished.
Wide receiver Kenny Golladay is the saving grace for an anemic offense led by an undrafted rookie quarterback (David Blough) and a rookie running back they plucked off of a practice squad (Bo Scarbrough). His big-play prowess can help them move the ball because he does it better than anyone else.
As pointed out by Jeff Risdon of The Lions Wire, Golladay “has emerged as the NFL’s best deep threat.” The stats show it. No wide receiver has more receptions of 20-plus yards than the third-year standout. He has 19 through 13 games — an impressive feat for somebody who has played with three different passers.
Golladay also has the highest rate of catches that cover at least 20 yards with 35.8%, beating out Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams.
What makes it more impressive?
As Risdon says: “What makes this even more impressive for Golladay is that he still ranks near the bottom of all wide receivers in average separation per route run.”
In his third-year in the NFL, Golladay has emerged as one of the brightest future stars of the professional level. Though his quarterback rotation has been a mess — post-Stafford (back) –, he has tallied 53 receptions for 1,008 yards and 10 touchdowns.
With Marvin Jones now on the injured reserve, expect Blough to feed Golladay on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Once an already fantastic fantasy football start, he looks even better in the playoffs.
