New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia looks set to become the Detroit Lions’ new head coach, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

According to Schefter, Patricia and the Lions will still need to work out contract details after the end of the Patriots’ season as per NFL rules, but a deal is expected to be done.

Patricia had also been heavily linked with the New York Giants’ head coaching gig, but it seems he’s all but likely to end up in Detroit to replace the departed Jim Caldwell. Patricia would also be reunited with former Patriots personnel man and current Lions general manager Bob Quinn in Detroit.

Patricia has been with the Patriots during his entire 14-year career as an NFL coach and has spent the last six seasons as the team’s defensive coordinator. He was instrumental in helping the team win three more Super Bowls during that span.

Aside from Patricia, the Patriots are also expected to lose offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who is reportedly a top contender for both the Giants’ and the Indianapolis Colts’ head coaching jobs.

Patricia will look to further improve a Lions defense which was much better in 2017 than it was in 2016 but was still mediocre. One of his first tasks as Lions head coach will be to help find a new defensive coordinator after Teryl Austin recently left the team to be the Cincinnati Bengals’ defensive coordinator.

However, Patricia still has some unfinished business with the Patriots, who are off to the AFC Championship Game after beating the Tennessee Titans 35-14 on Saturday. Patricia’s defense put up a new postseason franchise-record seven sacks during that game.
