Today, the New York Giants announced that they have decided to suspend second-year cornerback Eli Apple for their Week 17 matchup against the Washington Redskins for disciplinary reasons.
Apple was notified of his suspension on Wednesday afternoon by Giants interim general manager Kevin Abrams and interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo.
Per Giants senior writer Michael Eisen on the team's official website:
“We have suspended Eli for a pattern of behavior that is conduct detrimental to the team,” Abrams said.
Apple, who has played in 11 games this season while making seven starts, has experienced a disastrous sophomore season after he was drafted with the N0. 1o overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. In those 11 games, Apple registered 49 tackles, eight pass deflections, and zero interceptions.
During last Sunday's 23-0 shutout loss to the Arizona Cardinals, Apple played exclusively on special teams while cornerbacks Brandon Dixon and Ross Cockrell each had 68 snaps.
“The way the practices went last week, we felt that the two guys that we played practiced better with the group and that’s why we went in that direction,” Spagnuolo said.
Yesterday, Giants Pro Bowl safety Landon Collins ripped on Apple in a radio interview, and Spagnuolo sat down with both players today to discuss it.
“(Landon and I) had a quick conversation this morning and then I had a quick conversation with Eli,” Spagnuolo said. “Then all three of us had a really good conversation and it was very productive and I’ll just leave it at that. It’s between them and they were really great.”
With a loss to the Redskins on Sunday at MetLife Stadium or an Indianapolis Colts loss to the Houston Texans, the Giants would lock up the No. 2 overall selection in the 2018 NFL Draft in late April.
