Despite still not having the contract extension he’s been pining for, Odell Beckham Jr. is expected to be in attendance for the New York Giants’ mandatory minicamp, which starts on Tuesday. However, it remains to be seen just how much work OBJ will do during minicamp as he is yet to receive full medical clearance on his ankle.

According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, there was “discussion” within the Giants on Monday about announcing Beckham’s full clearance in order to get him to participate in team drills. However, Beckham would apparently prefer to sit out any team work during minicamp as he continues to progress from his injury.

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur has hinted on a couple of occasions recently that Beckham is fairly close to getting cleared. And it seems that it may just be a matter of announcing it to the public.

But even if he does get cleared, it still makes sense for Beckham to remain cautious about his ankle. Ramping up his work during practice would bring added risk of a potential injury. And since he still does not have the security of a new long-term contract, he’s understandably concerned about doing anything to risk suffering another injury.

Unlike other stars who are holding out for new contracts, Beckham is playing nice with the Giants by actually attending mandatory minicamp. However, he still has his long-term future to consider, so it seems unlikely that he’d be compelled to do team work unless he’s fully confident in himself avoiding further injury.
