Despite losing big to the Texans this past Saturday, there were some positive takeaways for the Packers heading into their next preseason matchup. With a ton of players hoping to seal a roster spot this season, there were definitely some major standouts in the preseason matchup against Houston.
Looking to make a big splash this season, Green Bay is hoping to add talent that will have an immediate impact in the quest to win back the NFC and hoist another Super Bowl trophy. Having said all this, let's take a look at three Packers battling for roster spots who impressed in the preseason opener against the Texans.
Packers standouts:
Kabion Ento
Kabion Ento made a timely interception and shut down the Texans' receivers the entire time he was on the field. Ento showed a ton of promise and brought some stellar playmaking to the Packers' secondary.
For a Packers team that lacks quality depth at the cornerback spot, this was truly a breath of fresh air — it gives them something to look forward to once the regular season starts.
If he can keep up this level of production throughout the rest of the preseason, then there's no reason he shouldn't be able to nab a roster spot and continue to make a difference in the Packers' secondary. With his size, speed, and skills, he'd make for the perfect partner-in-crime with Jaire Alexander next season.
Malik Taylor
By catching all five passes thrown his way and helping the Packers earn three first downs and 50 yards, Malik Taylor may have given the Pack a glimpse into their future at wideout. He also had a great showing on special teams and could prove to be another positionless player in the NFL.
Article Continues BelowHe has a better chance of sticking on the roster with his skill set as both wide receiver and punt returner. If the Packers want to add more youth and athleticism to their receiver corps behind Davante Adams and Devin Funchess, they should definitely consider the addition of Malik Taylor. This assumes he can sustain this level of efficiency throughout the remainder of the preseason.
Jordan Love
Although he was forced out of the game due to a minor injury, it's hard to overlook his first on-field performance, especially after he went 12-17 and threw for 122 yards and a touchdown. This is definitely something to be excited about for the Packers' coaching staff and front office. With the cloud of uncertainty regarding Aaron Rodgers' future with the team, Love's performance definitely gave them something to build upon.
Assuming he can stay healthy enough to finish out the preseason, Love has definitely shown what he can bring to the table for the Packers if he is called to become the starting quarterback at any point during the upcoming season.
Granted it was just one game, but that should give Jordan Love enough momentum to build on while giving the Packers some relief at quarterback if Aaron Rodgers does get traded sometime during the 2021-22 season, or in the offseason. Green Bay needs to know what it has, and the first preseason game of the year gave the team more information in its search for better answers.
The Packers have two more preseason games in which to gather information about what they can do, up and down their roster. We'll see if they can build upon their preseason opener.
