Green Bay Packers star quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been reportedly lobbying coach Matt LaFleur to get on the gridiron in the team's next preseason game.
Per The Athletic's Matt Schneidman, the 35-year-old former NFL MVP “wants to play Thursday” if Matt LaFleur “will let him.”

LaFleur, entering his first year in charge of the Packers and their prized quarterback, has to be careful with Rodgers, who was rumored to be dismayed with former coach Mike McCarthy and how the ex-Packers coach handled the offense. Rodgers, who missed the playoffs for the second consecutive season in 2018, also had his back “locked up,” according to Schneidman. Testing it against the Oakland Raiders in the team's third preseason game on Thursday could be detrimental to the QB's heath.

The number of snaps and quarters first-team starters have been allowed to play in the preseason has been a point of contention across the league, due to a multitude of injuries in 2019 exhibition games. For instance, New York Jets starting linebacker Avery Williamson tore an ACL last week against the Atlanta Falcons while the other 10 defensive players were out of the game.
Rodgers could use the preseason competition reps to test his back, but playing could further damage it. The risks involved will be noted by LaFleur. They will shape the likelihood of whether the already-starting QB plays before Week 1 against the Chicago Bears in September.
