Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald’s name has been strongly linked with the Green Bay Packers’ head coaching job. Fitzgerald has a strong connection with Packers CEO Mark Murphy, who hired him at Northwestern when Murphy as the university’s AD.

Fitzgerald has turned down multiple opportunities to interview for NFL jobs in the past, but with his relationship with Murphy, the thinking was perhaps he would finally make an exception. But apparently not.

Following Northwestern’s Holiday Bowl win on Monday night, Fitzgerald just about took himself out of the running for the Packers job — or any other job, for that matter.

“Hashtag Go Cats, man. I’m not going anywhere. This is home forever,” Fitzgerald said per Darren Rovell of ESPN.

Fitzgerald has now been the head coach at his alma mater for 13 seasons, garnering an impressive 96-70 career record. He also led the Wildcats to the Big Ten West title after an 8-1 conference record.

It seems Fitzgerald is fully satisfied with where he is and doesn’t seem interested in moving on to the pros. Although, his statement should be taken with a grain of salt considering it came immediately after an emotional win.

If Fitzgerald really has his heart set on staying, the Packers will have one fewer person on their list of candidates to be their next head coach. However, the Packers still have a decent number of candidates to choose from considering the number of interviews they have already requested.
