The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed linebacker Joe Schobert to a five-year deal worth $53.75 million, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The contract contains $22.5 million in guaranteed money.

Schobert spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns and is coming off of a 2019 campaign in which he played every game and registered 133 tackles, a couple of sacks, four interceptions, a pair of forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and nine passes defended.

The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Wisconsin, was originally selected by the Browns in the fourth round (99th pick overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft.

He appeared in every contest during his rookie year but had a limited role, logging just 28 tackles and a half of a sack. The following year, Schobert became a full-time starter and broke out, racking up a league-leading 144 stops to go along with three sacks, a pick, three forced fumbles and four passes defended, en route to a Pro Bowl appearance.

Widely regarded as one of the better coverage linebackers in the NFL, Schobert was one of the top free-agent defensive players available in free agency.

Typically known for their defense, the Jaguars have taken a significant hit in that area over the past couple of years, of several of their key players on that side of the ball have departed.
