The 2018 NFL season did not go quite as planned for Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette. As a result, he could be entering a bit of a deciding year in Jacksonville.
Fournette is coming off a disastrous 2018 campaign that saw him struggle both on and off the field. According to John Reid of the Florida Times-Union, the 2019 NFL season could be a make-or-break year for him.
It’s a make-or-break season, but Fournette got a clean slate after rushing for just 439 yards in eight games that included an ejection for fighting during a game at Buffalo that led to a one-game suspension from the NFL. In April, Fournette was arrested for driving with a suspended license but the case was dismissed when he was fined $303 after he pleaded no contest.
There is certainly plenty of truth to the prospect of Fournette being on thin ice in Jacksonville. Not only has he struggled to stay healthy but his antics away from football raises even further concerns about his ability to play moving forward. The onus has now fallen on him to prove that his worst days are behind him.
Fournette's career got off to a promising start and the Jaguars know full well that he is capable of serving as a bonafide workhorse in the offense. Unfortunately, they have seen how quickly things can turn heel for after last season. Regardless, the 24-year-old should have ample opportunities to prove that he can still handle the heavy workload moving forward. It will be interesting to see how Fournette responds in 2019.
