Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette has a suggestion on how to make the team better this upcoming season. His suggestion is to sign veteran quarterback Cam Newton, who was recently released by the Carolina Panthers.
“Cam went to the Super Bowl,” Fournette said. “He's a great guy. I've been knowing Cam for a minute now. And like I told some people that talked to me, it's no disrespect to [Gardner Minshew]. I'm just trying to get in the best position as a team as we can [to] win.
“That's all that was about. Just friendly competition 'cause that brings out the best in people.”
As of right now, the Jaguars only have two quarterbacks on their roster, Gardner Minshew and Joshua Dobbs. Despite Minshew's rookie success, he isn't really a solidified starter in this league yet. This past season, Minshew went 6-6 in his 12 games he started. Signing Newton, who has a proven record, can add competition for Minshew for the starting role this upcoming season.
This past season, Newton played in only two games and recorded 572 passing yards and one interception. Despite his terrible season due to injuries, he still has the potential to become the player he was before.
Recently, Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone said that he plans to add another quarterback to their roster.
“Right now if we went to play, Gardner Minshew's our guy and I'm excited about that,” Marrone said. “But do I want competition for him? Absolutely. You want competition for everyone, though.
Nevertheless, it'll be interesting to see who'll be the starting quarterback for the Jaguars this upcoming season.
