The Jacksonville Jaguars haven't committed to either Nick Foles or Gardner Minshew for next season, but Foles could be on his way out. Despite the reports, Jacksonville hasn't had yet had substantial trade talks involving Foles.
On Tuesday, it was reported that the Jaguars were interested in manufacturing a trade to send Foles elsewhere. Even though there could be interest from teams, Jacksonville hasn't begun discussing details with other franchises yet.
Of course, one of the obstacles preventing a trade from taking place is his current contract. Last offseason, the veteran signal-caller signed a four-year, $88 million deal with the Jaguars.
In his first regular-season game with the Jaguars, Foles suffered a broken clavicle after taking a huge hit from Chris Jones of the Kansas City Chiefs. As a result, Foles underwent surgery and only started in four games in 2019.
Heading into next season, Foles is set to be a $22.1 million cap hit for Jacksonville. At the same time, trading Foles would induce a $18.75 million dead-cap penalty for the Jaguars. However, if the team is confident in Minshew, then it could be worth eating that money.
Finding a suitor for Foles isn't going to be easy by any means, especially with him mightily struggling in 2019. Plus, the Jaguars would have to find a team that is capable of taking on his massive contract.
Of the possible candidates for the Jaguars to work with, the Indianapolis Colts do make a ton of sense. Frank Reich, the head coach of the Colts, was the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017; when Foles won the Super Bowl for the Eagles.
In addition, the Colts have the cap space to bring Foles in from the Jaguars to compete with Jacoby Brissett. Above all, Foles would be a cheaper target than the other options in free agency.
