The Oakland Raiders took running back Josh Jacobs with the 24th overall pick and ESPN is expecting a big rookie season. Jacobs split carries with the Crimson Tide which caused many to question why the Raiders selected him so high, but an elite skill set means he should be able to be counted on heavily, even as a rookie.
ESPN's official projection show Jacobs rushing 225 times for 988 yards and six touchdowns. They also expect 40 receptions for 333 yards and another touchdown.
If Jacobs would have rushed for 988 yards last year that would have put him 11th highest in the NFL right behind Nick Chubb and right before James Conner. The six touchdowns is a bit low but would have tied him with Ezekiel Elliott and others for 20th among backs.
The Raiders also have Doug Martin and Jalen Richards on the roster who will also get carries but there is no indication either of those guys are a threat to the starting job.
Article Continues BelowLast year Martin was the leading back for the Raiders rushing for 723 yards but he isn't the future of the team and should be used as a backup this year.
Marshawn Lynch was the last Raiders running back to have a lot of success, and Jacobs elite vision and physicality are a lot like the former California Bears star.
The Raiders also have improved run blocking for this upcoming season which should help Adams really succeed as a rookie. Who knows maybe a strong rookie season will be enough to bring home some hardware.
