The Oakland Raiders were able to fight out a win in their season opener against the Denver Broncos by a final score of 24-16. It was a game that helped alleviate the pressure of the Antonio Brown drama and a big start for a team that struggled mightily last season. Unfortunately, Gareon Conley suffered an apparent neck injury during the game.
Conley ended up having to be stretchered off the field and there has been a lot of concern about him. Jon Gruden gave a positive update about the talented cornerback following the game.
“I got good word on him that he’s going to be OK. I don’t know his status for the next game, but most importantly the kid is alright. That was a scary hit that he took, but all the reports that I have are very, very positive.”
The 24-year-old cornerback has earned himself a big role with the Raiders this season. He was drafted with the No. 24 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and is finally starting to come into himself in the NFL.
Prior to his injury, Conley had racked up four total tackles against the Broncos, with two of them being solo.
Oakland will hope to see Conley back on the field for their Week 2 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. It is unknown at this point in time if he will be able to play, but they certainly could use him. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have one of the league's most potent offenses.
All of that being said, this is great news following a scary situation. More information will come available about Conley in the near future, but hopefully this injury doesn't keep him out long.
