The Oakland Raiders made quite the investment in order to bring head coach Jon Gruden out of retirement. However, it appears he is ready to give it all up if things do not pan out right away.

The Raiders signed Gruden to the tune of a 10-year, $100 million deal this offseason. According to Jarrett Bell of USA Today, he will not take the money if he is unable to get the job done:

“If I can’t get it done, I’m not going to take their money,” Gruden said.

“Who guarantees I’m going to live 10 years?” he said. “So I don’t think about that. You start thinking about a 10-year contract – people don’t know how it’s structured and it doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is, ‘Is Khalil Mack going to be here? Is Donald Penn going to be ready to play?’ I’ve got more important things to worry about than eight years of my contract.”

This is certainly a bold sentiment for Gruden. However, it is indicative of his desire to win rather than make money. After all, he had been one of the highest-paid broadcasters in the media during retirement. So it is safe to assume that money is not the issue here.

For Gruden, there is a sense of unfinished business with the Raiders. He had nearly coached the Raiders to a Super Bowl during his first stint in Oakland. It seems he is intent on finishing the job. He will certainly have his work cut out for him following a disappointing 2017 campaign. However, the Raiders made some solid additions this offseason along with Gruden that could make all the difference.
