It comes as no surprise that the Los Angeles Chargers have suffered a variety of injuries in 2019. The team seems to suffer a disproportionate amount of hurt players every year, and this season is no different.

Injuries to tight ends Hunter Henry and Sean Culkin have forced fullback Derek Watt into playing tight end. Watt played a couple snaps at that position in Week 4 against the Miami Dolphins, and was serviceable. He notched a 21-yard catch and provided decent blocking.

When asked about the position switch, Watt had nothing but positivity to share with LA Times writer Jeff Miller.

“It looks very similar to what I do at fullback, so it’s not a big change. There’s a lot of carryover. They called plays where I could go in there and do what had to be done without thinking too much about it.” Watt said.

Watt has also earned high praise from head coach Anthony Lynn.

“Derek has done a nice job of playing fullback and tight end. I tell him all the time, ‘You’re going to be our Dallas Clark.’ He can block on the line of scrimmage. He’s a good receiver out of the backfield.” Coach Lynn said.

It's unlikely that Watt plays significant time at tight end, but he's an alright fill-in player. The only other tight end on roster is Lance Kendricks, a journeyman player who has spent time with the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams.
