The 2020 NFL season has finally arrived following an unprecedented offseason due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Although teams may have arrived at their final 53-man rosters, Los Angeles Chargers general manager Tom Telesco feels nothing is set in stone.
The Chargers made notable improvements throughout a number of position groups this offseason. Regardless, Telesco feels it will take some time to figure out where their shortcomings truly are, via Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times:
“As we all start playing real games … we’re going to really see what we have,” general manager Tom Telesco said Sunday. “We have some inkling. But, I’ll be honest with you, I don’t really know a lot of the different position groups until we start playing real games.”
Telesco's comments are certainly understandable given the challenges involved with preparing amid an ongoing pandemic. The fact that the Chargers are hoping to usher in a new era at SoFi Stadium own the right foot only amplified these concerns.
One of the biggest changes for the Chargers came under center with Tyrod Taylor slated to fill in for Philip Rivers after his 14 seasons with the team. There is some speculation regarding the state of Taylor's receiving corps with the injury of Mike Williams. Although the heavy investment in wide receiver Keenan Allen is set to pay off rather quickly, it remains to be seen which of these untested players will emerge into viable options in the passing game.
For now, Telesco seems to be holding his breath until the Chargers' flaws are made clear a few weeks into the season.
