The Los Angeles Chargers suffered their latest disappointing loss on Sunday night, falling to the Pittsburgh Steelers by a score of 24-17 at home.
The game ended with Philip Rivers getting picked off by Steelers cornerback Cameron Sutton, which thwarted the Chargers' last-minute comeback hopes. Fellow Pittsburgh cornerback Mike Hilton then waved goodbye to the Los Angeles bench, which prompted Rivers to grab Hilton.
Afterward, Rivers explained himself:
Article Continues Below“I was disappointed the game was over,” said Rivers, according to Jacob Klinger of Penn Live. “I wasn’t frustrated. A guy comes and waves at our sideline, you protect your team. It was really no big deal. I haven’t seen him (since), but I’d probably shake his hand and tell him, ‘Sorry, I got a little fired up.’ But it wasn’t a big deal. There was no screaming and yelling. It was just defending our guys.”
Rivers has always been known for wearing his heart on his sleeve, and with the Chargers now 2-4 in a season that many expected them to contend for a Super Bowl, there is surely some built-up frustration inside the quarterback.
The fact that Rivers has not played all that well certainly doesn't help matters much, either.
The 37-year-old completed 26 of his 44 passes for 320 yards, a couple of touchdowns and a pair of interceptions against the Steelers, and on the season overall, Rivers has thrown for 1,785 yards, nine touchdowns and six picks while completing 66.8 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 91.1.
Los Angeles has dropped three home games in a row, losing to the Houston Texans in Week 3 and the Denver Broncos in Week 5 prior to falling to Pittsburgh this past weekend.
