The Los Angeles Chargers got some unsettling news on Sunday, as star running back Melvin Gordon may have endured a potentially detrimental injury to his season, per Eric Williams of ESPN.

This is definitely the kind of injury that should not be taken lightly and it'll be worth monitoring throughout the week. Perhaps the fashion in which Gordon was injured adds insult to injury since he was hurt on an unnecessary trick play. The extent of the injury is obviously uncertain for now, but head coach Anthony Lynn provided some insight.

According to Herbie Teope, an Around the NFL writer, Lynn stated “His knee is swollen right now. We don't know exactly what it is. We'll get a further evaluation tomorrow, and we'll go from there.”

Gordon has had his fair share of injuries this season, and although the Chargers cruised to a 45-10 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, the team's success at least early on was largely due to Gordon's presence. Gordon may miss next week's game against Pittsburgh as reported by Williams, and it may be beneficial considering the Chargers are making a strong case for the playoffs.

Los Angeles possesses an 8-3 record on the season, but unfortunately, finds itself fighting an uphill battle against a powerhouse in the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chargers will need their star running back healthy if they hope to make any kind of noise the rest of the season. Gordon adds a whole other side to the Chargers' offense, and if he needs to miss any time, his presence will surely be missed.
