Tyrod Taylor would be the starting quarterback for the Los Angeles Chargers if the season were to start today. But he also is motivated by the idea of the team bringing in another guy to serve as competition. Taylor has been in the league for nine seasons and mostly has served as a backup.
Taylor hasn't received great breaks in the NFL. While with the Cleveland Browns, team brought in Baker Mayfield. The Chargers made a run at Tom Brady in free agency, but he decided to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They haven't been connected to any other available free-agent quarterbacks. But with their first-round draft pick, they could select someone who they hope can be their long-term solution.
Chargers QB Motivated by ‘Highs and Lows'
Article Continues Below“It's motivating just for the highs and lows of my career,” Taylor said via Kevin Patra of NFL.com. “To be drafted in the sixth round, walking into my 10th year, there's definitely a lot of motivating factors in there being from my time when I was in Buffalo and when I played in Cleveland.”
Taylor said even with the motivation of a battle, it's too early to talk about if he could be the starting quarterback. The veteran QB acknowledged a lot of moves can still be made.
“I think it's too early to start talking about it,” Taylor said when asked if he sees himself as the Chargers' starting quarterback in Week 1 of the 2020 season. “I've never been one to focus on things that I can't control. It starts with guys who (the Chargers) may sign whether it would be a veteran or whether it would be a rookie. I can't focus on that because I can't control it. So I feel like if I'm putting too much time into that then I'm not putting enough time into myself to be the best player .
Even if he doesn't end up being the starter, Taylor is still a great backup option. And judging from his comments about the situation, he's a true professional.
