Entering year four in the NFL, quarterback Jared Goff is a team captain and leader for the Los Angeles Rams. Teammates on the other side of the ball are witnessing that, including fellow team captain and two-time Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald.

Said Donald of Goff, via ESPN's Lindsey Thiry:

“[He's] controlling our offense. When they make a mistake, he's getting on guys. Stuff that you want to see from the starting quarterback.”

Goff once wasn't exactly the conductor of the offense. During his first season with head coach Sean McVay, he received play calls and adjustments through the speaker in his helmet by the coach. That didn't earn him fans. However, Donald is witnessing a different quarterback – one that controls the offense, with less help than needed previously from McVay.

Goff's progression as a leader and controller of the high-powered Rams offense likely played a major role in his recent contract extension. Prior to the start of the 2019 regular season, Los Angeles handed him a $134 million extension spanning over four seasons with an NFL record $110 million guaranteed.

The 2016 No. 1 overall pick, Goff has shown immense growth throughout his young career. Once a winless rookie, the former Cal Golden Bear went to the Super Bowl in year three of his career. Though he lost, getting there was impressive for a 24-year-old. Now, he's the leader of the Rams offense, not just owning the captain patch, but also controlling an offense that was once orchestrated solely by McVay's words.
