Following a topsy-turvy first campaign back in Los Angeles, the Rams turned it around in a major way this past season earning their first NFC West division title and playoff berth in well over a decade. The team has only further built on that growing buzz in the city around the franchise with the numerous notable additions made in free agency.
However, the arrival of All-Star forward LeBron James to the Los Angeles Lakers on a four-year, $153 million deal has shifted that level of excitement back toward that organization. According to Gary Klein of the LA Times, it is something that Rams Pro Bowl quarterback Jared Goff conceded that the city of Los Angeles may now be James.
Is Goff, 23, ready to make the city his own?
“There’s so much that goes on in this city,” Goff said. “People want to label it ‘somebody’s.’ I don’t think it is anybody’s.”
Then he laughs and reconsiders.
“That guy [James] that just came into town — it might be his now.
“We’re just trying to win football games, and if you do, there’s a lot of cool things that go along with being in L.A.”
Although the Rams made a plethora moves this offseason to bring aboard plenty of proven talent such as All-Pro cornerback Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib along with defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. The team also acquired star wide receiver Brandin Cooks to give Goff another weapon in the passing game.
Despite all that, the Lakers addition of James tops any of the moves that the Rams made as the 33-year-old is the best player in the NBA still playing some of the best basketball of his career heading into his 16th season in the league. On top of that, the four-time league MVP has the opportunity to turn around one of the most illustrious franchises in all of the professional sports.
With all of that in mind, this shouldn't diminish the building momentum the Rams have continued to take that could see them truly contend for a Super Bowl.
