The Los Angeles Rams found themselves just one win away from raising a Super Bowl trophy last season. Now they'll be entering 2019 as one of the favorites to find themselves back in the biggest game of the year.
A major reason for that is the ridiculously talented and loaded roster they have. That leaks over to the defense and into the secondary.
According to Vincent Bonsignore of The Athletic, head coach Sean McVay sees a problem with it. It's not exactly a bad problem by any stretch of the imagination, but it's still a problem that will need to be solved.
That problem is the depth in the secondary. Not that they don't have enough, but they might have too much.
The starters at cornerback are pretty obvious. There's Marcus Peters, Aqib Talib, and Nickell Robey-Coleman. After that, though, there are a lot of players for just a few spots.
Article Continues BelowRookie David Long is an intriguing player that deserves a look. Meanwhile, Troy Hill and Kevin Peterson are solid veterans. Darious Williams and Ramon Richards are underrated players who have potential. Finally, Dominique Hatfield and Donte Deayon looked improved last season.
That's a lot of names for two (maybe three) spots. You could see the issue for McVay. Especially considering even the players that do make the roster aren't exactly going to be overflowing with playing time. The sixth and likely even fifth corners aren't going to be in many packages barring injuries.
With that in mind, it gives McVay a lot of flexibility. He should feel comfortable should anything happen, but for the meantime needs to find a way to get everyone a proper look in the preseason to figure everything out.
Either way, this is the best kind of “problem” a team can have. The Los Angeles Rams are in a great spot at cornerback heading into the 2019 regular season.
