The San Jose Sharks made history on Tuesday, naming Mike Grier as the franchise's new general manager. Grier is the first black general manager in NHL history. He joins his brother to hold that level of responsibility of a professional franchise. His brother, Chris Grier, has been the Miami Dolphins general manager since 2016.
After the news broke, Chris shared a heartfelt message for his brother.

“I am incredibly happy and proud of Mike. The San Jose Sharks organization is getting a man of high character and integrity. He has always been respected on and off the field by his peers. Mike will bring his work ethic and passion every day to the job. Mike understands the game, with intelligence, experience and knowledge to succeed as GM. Our parents deserve all the credit for how they raised us. We were very fortunate to be able to observe and learn from our father, Bobby, while growing up. Congratulations to Mike and the San Jose Sharks on a great hire!”
Mike Grier previously played 14 seasons in the NHL before retiring in 2011. He played right wing in 1,060 career games, scoring 161 goals and 221 assists for 383 points. He spent the first six seasons of his career with the Edmonton Oilers before moving on to play for the Washington Capitals, San Jose Sharks and Buffalo Sabres.
It is a historic move by the Sharks, and one that will be applauded across all of sports. Hockey has always been known as a anglo-saxon sport, with limited minorities of people of color in the league. This is a major milestone for the sport and our society.
