Veteran running back LeSean McCoy was a casualty of roster cuts on Saturday when the Buffalo Bills released him.
In some of the least shocking news of the day. though, McCoy is already generating some heavy interest from a number of teams. It appears that the New England Patriots and his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles are among the teams with the “strongest early interest” in McCoy.
All four teams that Ian Rapoport mentioned in that tweet make a whole bunch of sense.
The Kansas City Chiefs, who general manager Brett Veach said will “take a peek” at McCoy, are rolling with a running back with less than 200 career carries, Damien Williams, as their starter after trading Carlos Hyde. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers are uncertain what Melvin Gordon's status is. There's a chance he's never playing for the team again, and if that's the case they'll certainly need a backup plan.
However, the Eagles and Patriots might be the two most interesting teams. The reason for that is McCoy's role would be uncertain.
Article Continues BelowWith the Chiefs he'd get some serious playing time and with the Chargers he would be the backup plan to Gordon.
The Eagles have four running backs already. Jordan Howard and Miles Sanders are the two that will get the most carries. Darren Sproles is more of a return man and might get some third-down/receiving back spots. Finally, while Corey Clement's role will likely be small.
Meanwhile, the Patriots have Sony Michel and James White. Michel was an absolute stud last season in his rookie campaign and the Patriots have shown they want to use him even more this year. Then there's White, an elite receiving back. With that in mind, McCoy's fit would mean taking plays away from two extremely talented and proven players who worked great together last year.
It's important to remember that this is simply interest, though. Both teams are likely considering a move because McCoy's still an ultra-talented player. It's probably not as hard for them to know how he would fit with the team.
