New England Patriots free safety Devin McCourty offered remarks on the team's recent signing, free-agent safety Terrence Brooks.
The Patriots signed Brooks to a two-year, $4.1 million deal in free agency earlier in March. Brooks had played 84 special-teams snaps against the Patriots the past two seasons as a member of the New York Jets. In an AFC East in which the Jets' new coach, Adam Gase, previously coached for the Miami Dolphins, and in which new Miami quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick had played for the Jets and the Buffalo Bills, the game of divisional switcheroo has not slowed down.
McCourty, now accompanied by another safety, welcomed the move, as the Patriots gear up for another season in which they know they might have to face the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes in the postseason.
“Having a new safety in the room, I'm sure will be great. We have a lot of older guys, and even getting Obi [Melifonwu] last year, some of the quirkiness and things he brought I thought was very refreshing. So I'm excited about that as well.”
Devin McCourty briefly hinted at the possibility before Super Bowl LIII that he might step away from football, but then reiterated his intention to play in 2019.
“At that point, that was Media Night when Deion said that to me, and it's like, yeah, man, if we won a Super Bowl, I don't know what else could top that,” he said. “I think in that moment I kind of forgot that I don't play this game just to win Super Bowls.
“There's so much more that comes from me playing the game that I love. I think once you get a chance to step away for a couple weeks, you're like, yeah, I still do want to be around these other young guys that come in.”
Brooks, 27, might not be that much younger than Devin McCourty in a sport whose careers are conspicuously brief. Yet, when reading what McCourty had to say just after the Super Bowl, his words about welcoming Brooks ring true. McCourty sounds like someone who, in the weeks following the end of another NFL season, is refreshed about the prospect of playing another one in New England.
