Schiano will replace Brian Flores who accepted the Miami Dolphins job after the Patriots won their sixth Super Bowl on Sunday. The Patriots have had a lot of turnover at the defensive coordinator position after Matt Patricia left after last season to become the Detroit Lions head coach. Schiano is one of the more respected coaches in the business and has a close relationship with head coach Bill Belichick.

Schiano spent 11 years with Rutgers and helped turn around their program leading them to six winning seasons.
He also spent two years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their head coach but was fired after leading them to an 11-21 record. Back in 2015, Belichick was asked about Schiano, and he had nothing but praise for him.
“I think Coach Schiano is a great defensive coach and he’s really coached all the positions — line, linebacker, DBs,” Belichick said via The Boston Globe. “He’s had a lot of extensive work with defensive backs and I think he does a great job with them, but I’d say the overall way that he presents his program, the way he runs his program, runs his defense, teaches and so forth, that that’s all a great part of preparing players either in a similar way that we do it or when he was in college prepared them to come into our program with some changes but minimal maybe compared to other teams.”
